A license file, nothing more
Portasort runs under a license file signed by the vendor for the hosts you name. There is no license server and no network access: every run checks the file before it reads anything, in a few milliseconds.
Getting a license
Show the host identity
On each host that will run Portasort, run the program with
PORTASORT_PROGRAM=LICENSE. It prints the host name and the machine-id.
Send it to us
Mail the output to info@portasort.com, saying whether you want a trial or a production license.
Install the file
Put the license you receive beside the program as portasort.lic, or point
PORTASORT_LICENSE to it. Run the same command again to check it.
$ PORTASORT_PROGRAM=LICENSE portasort PSC576I host identity: host name lnxprod1, machine-id 4c1d2e8a9b7f40d6a1e3c5b7d9f0a2c4 PSC577I license RS-2026-001 (/opt/portasort/portasort.lic): production, licensee Rossi S.p.A., hosts lnxprod1,lnxprod2, issued 2026-10-09, expires 2027-10-08, grace days 30
Trial license
For evaluating Portasort with your own job steps and data, on the hosts you name, for a limited period. When it expires, Portasort stops at once: a trial has no grace days.
Production license
For running your jobs, on the hosts you name, for the agreed term. Portasort warns from 30 days before the expiry, and keeps running during the grace days after it, so a late renewal never stops your batch.
Good to know
- A license names hosts by their host name, and optionally by their systemd machine-id. Copying the file to another host does not work.
- The license is a text file: comments may be added, but any change to its fields makes it invalid.
- Containers often get a new host name at each start: give them a fixed host name, or ask for a license valid on any host.
- The license check uses the system clock, never the run date a job sets for its date constants.
